Wisdom Comes Suddenly

Elfing 2012

I find it surprising the number of quiet afternoons I’ve managed to spend sewing lately. It is December, yes?  Shouldn’t I be standing in line somewhere, waiting to pay too much? Starting well in advance of my deadline (I must have hit my head), I feel the need to turn off the computer and lay down the phone.  I’m trying to make a conscious effort this year to be present while I create.  Usually I design projects in my head in advance of the work, and spend the work time ruminating on the 100 other things I should be doing.  It’s distracting at best, and guaranteed to be downright draining.  So I shouldn’t be surprised that this year’s change of habit is producing better work. When I post the finished Teacher’s Gifts Bags this year, you’ll know I was there when I made them.  Making handmade is a gift the creator gives to herself as well, even if it’s just time to be.  I hope this Christmas season finds you and your hands making something special. Do tell!

Max! Syd!  Get in here!  The Ka-Chunk machine is actually a thread-maker!  There is thread coming from the top and thread coming from the bottom…BEAUTIFUL, GLORIOUS THREAD EVERYWHERE!!!  And look at the ribbon! It’s like Cat Disney in here.  But there’s a catch: the toys are protected by tiny swords.  Guard that pedal thing…I’m going in for a look-see…

You know the secret of my heart.

I am making an iPad case for DS’s girlfriend and possibly a gorilla pillow for my BIL (he’s infatuated with African wildlife.) Money is tight this year and I can use my “inventory” and time to give a little bit of me to my loved ones.

Blessings to you and your family!

I got a fancy new sewing machine for my birthday last night. My husband is awesome and I am eager to get to the projects!

I just finished a bathrobe for my sweet grand-daughter’s 2nd birthday on the 23rd. . complete with a “bathrobe ornament” for her birthday tree that her mommy sets up with her special ornaments (December 23rd is a hard day for a birthday!) I bought myself a new Viking machine this month to “supplement” my 60 year old Pfaff! I’ll never give up the Pfaff, but the Viking sure is QUIET!!!

Stephanie and Pat, Congratulations! As you know, I like to name things. So my machine, Peter Pan, encourages you to do the same.

Chris, it’s something we rarely say out loud, yes? That handmade is secretly a gift for us too. To create quietly and let our brains wander where they may. Just touching textiles brings me joy. Merry Christmas.
