This blog was originally titled, “Some Day They’ll Be Famous”, named by Greg when he started the blog. He loved that name, envisioning his beautiful daughters (whom he calls Princess and Baby) boldly leading the Red Cross some day. I envisioned “famous” in more of an E! Entertainment kind of way: Lindsay Lohan falling out of a limo. Less Red Cross and more Red Light. Still, for a few years, nothing better came to mind.
Until it did, and as is the name of this blog: Wisdom Comes Suddenly. Greg and I first read this quote on the movie screen when we watched “Thirteen Conversations About One Thing”; it’s a somewhat depressing Indie film, but that quote stuck with us. We cannot find a better way to describe parenthood. You think you know what it will be like, and then one day, you become a parent, and it’s SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT. For the most part, the quote simply describes how one goes about learning parenthood: you change about 1000 diapers before it occurs to you to put the clean diaper underneath the dirty one before you peel off the sticky straps. You slice and quarter 1 billion hot dogs before you think to quarter first and slice second, thereby saving about 1 million cuts per hot dog. One morning you look at the drying rack and think to cut those pancakes into pieces with the pizza cutter. That time saver is the difference between showering and not showering on wickedly crazy days.
So as I’ve often said, wisdom does not come easily. It does not come quickly. It does not come without some serious sweat equity. WISDOM COMES SUDDENLY.
