We’ve deliberated for some time about how to introduce the topic of Baby Kelly to Sara. She is, after all, only 1. So many questions, absolutely no guarantees. Especially with a spirited child so attached to her parents that she actually chants our names in her sleep. Some wise friends have suggested that I really dive into the topic. After all, Sara has traditionally thrived on routine and preparation. Read her books about being a big sister, talk to her about Kelly, make sure she knows that Kelly is coming this summer.
So tonight, I bravely introduced the topic. I used the word “Baby” thinking she would grasp the concept with the same love and dedication she lavishes on her precious baby dolls. Baby Snuggle Beans eats more fries than Sara. Baby IshPooh gets at least 10 diaper changes per day.
Mommy: “Are you excited about Baby Kelly coming to live with us this summer so you can be her Big Sister?”
Sara: “NO!!!!!!!!”” As she throws a bucket on her head and runs for the front door.
I think in the big scheme of Sara reactions, that went pretty well.
