A Not-So-Typical Evening

Oh drama drama, caused by the Momma. Tonight as I attempted to trim Kelly’s dagger-like dragon lady nails, the inevitable happened; I cut her thumb. When one cuts the finger of their first child, a wild series of events follows: more crying by the parents than the child, hours of holding a kleenex over the endlessly bleeding digit, a call to the pediatrician, then more wringing of the hands and nashing of the teeth. If you think I’m joking, the list included herein is a digital replay of Sara’s first knick.

Kelly gets second child reaction, which includes me cuddling her and a hilarious reaction by Miss Sara. Sara pulled a manual to the thermometer out of a drawer and started madly thumbing through it, saying to herself, “make the baby stop tying (crying).” She didn’t invent this reaction in her world of make-believe. She is somehow replaying her entire first year of life. She cried for 52 weeks to the minute while Greg and I desperately consulted every baby book written. We must have done this so often that it is permanently written on her psyche!

I then calmly asked her to fetch me a Shrek Band-Aid. A-HA! YES! OF COURSE! After bandaging her imaginary boo-boos for weeks, she realizes she has been training for this moment. Sara to the rescue! Never has the child dashed with such purpose. After all, she had a life to save, or at least the thumb. She brought me the ban-ban with Donkey, because even though she loves “Baby Sis-er” with all her heart, she isn’t QUITE ready to share the ban-bans with Shrek’s picture. We bandaged the thumb, she congratulated herself endlessly for making the baby stop crying, and in the midst of the blood and gore, Kelly fell asleep.

Unfortunately, Sara also needed a good nail-trimmin’. I looked at her with hesitation, and said, “Um, Sara, I need to trim your nails.” To which she gave me a ditto hesitation look back and replied, “Ah…don’t hurt me.” She’s never sat so still for a manicure in her life! We make one helluva team.
