Daddy’s Princess

I’ve uttered the words I swore I’d never say. I’ve gone THERE…to No Man’s Land. Saying the things our Mothers said to us, that we SWORE ON DEBBIE GIBSON AND HER UNFAILING TALENT AS OUR WITNESS we would never say.

While having “lunch” (a word used lightly to represent more of a food carnival while attempting to ingest food with a 7 month old, a 2 year old, and a 3 year old at the table) at “The” Bob Evan’s in my hometown (we put “the” in front of all establishments, as in my hometown, there is only 1 of anything….someone should write a book on small town nomenclature because we’d perhaps seem less backwards to the big city folks, or….maybe not): I said to Sara as I flew across the table, wildly grabbing at the straw she was flinging about, spreading droplets of chocolate milk for like a 2 mile radius,

“DON’T MAKE ME CALL YOUR FATHER!”

There. It’s out there. Sara behaves far better for her father than for me. Even better for her Grandma. You’d think we put her in military school when sharing a room with Aunt Amanda. And after two days of her suffering from an acute case of, “No Mommy, I can’t hear you when you screech GET OFF OF KELLY’S HEAD“, I’ve had my fill of Miss Spirited Sara.

To add insult to injury, as I was putting Kelly to bed, I heard this conversation between Greg and Sara:

G: Mommy said you missed dinner when you were playing with Avery. Would you like oatmeal?

S: I WOULD like some oatmeal Daddy!

G: Do you want honey and sprinkles on your oatmeal?

S: I WOULD like honey and sprinkles Daddy! Sank you!

Are you kidding me? Tired, cranky, hungry Sara, and that’s what he got out of her? I am tough! I am consistent! I’ve read “Dare to Discipline”! And still, had I asked the same question, that child would have thrown her sippy cup down, buried her head in the carpet, and whined like Paul McCartney’s ex-wife.

I suppose he’s earned it. He does put Sara to bed every night. For that, he should get her good moods and like, um, I don’t know…maybe a MILLION dollars.

  1. Maybe Sara Sassy Pants saves all of her good stuff for you because she knows that you have an awesome sense of humor and can spin a single moment into a hilarious, laugh out loud, story with an 80s reference thrown in for good measure. Just a thought. Kids ARE intuitive.

  2. Maybe your Dear Sara has the energy of friend Amie, who knew how to tie her shoes before 5 yrs old but insisted she didn’t have to until she was 5.
Amie growing up was like a wild stallion, needing broke but now Broken!

    Amie’s Mother
wishing you all the luck in the world
