Harder than it looks

So I’m the INSANELY crazy woman who thought, “I know! I’ll take a quilting class!  Hey!  I’ve always wanted to quilt!  I haven’t sewn in 15 years, but heck.  I can sew!”

Where I’ve been spending my evenings…view through my front window

I came home from one class with two seams sewn and a cup of bravado.  2 classes, a zillion hours of cutting and sewing and ripping and sewing, and an odd day when I chewed through so many needles I had to wear safety glasses to troubleshoot the machine…and I’m thinking quilting is somewhat harder than it looks.

My first two rather crooked, but made with love…blocks.  The Shoofly and the Churn Dash

After completely destroying an entire block, making another trip to the fabric store, and finally putting on my clunky black glasses….I broke down in tears and seriously considered quitting. Sewing tiny things where an 1/8th of an inch constitutes a 50% error…frustrating.

But listen big world…I’m no quitter.  I regrouped, recut, remeasured, took a nap, grabbed a beer…and made this:

The Ohio Star, my favorite block design (with my VAST experience in making blocks)

I may never be a quilting artist, but maybe, someday…I will be a woman who can make quilts.  Warm, cozy wonderful quilts.  Full of color and scraps of fabric you’d never want to see on anything larger than a 4″ square.  It’s love in a blanket.  Silly sentimental me.  By tomorrow’s class I’ll be quitting again.  I’m tackling CIRCLES.  CIRCLES!! Are you kidding me?

  1. We love you, Lori…EXACTLY for who you are…quilting, not quilting, you are just too funny and a heck of a friend!
And by the way, to me you are already a winner. I don’t even have the courage to start, my friend!
    Keep going!
Noah and Oliver are in line for a handmade quilt from Aunt Lori!!! 🙂
    Love you, girl!
