My Little Distraction

Despite Sara’s endless energy and chatter-box-a-mania, at times, it’s a blessed distraction from my own head.  We’ve had a long week here at the Ranch.  Greg started his new job, and while very exciting, that also translates to emotionally exhausting.  I ran on over to my dermatologist’s office for yet another biopsy today.  I cannot explain the world of relief that washed over me when he took one look and said, “We’re taking it off, but I’m just certain that’s benign.”  OH….MY….GOD, thank you.  That thing literally changed overnight and it was so much like the first melanoma that I was sick with worry that it was my second.  But my doc doesn’t specialize in false hope, so when he says don’t worry…I don’t.

It’s week like these that I’m so thankful to have a 3 year old in the house.  Not only does she keep me too busy to eat, but she never disappoints me with her endless conversations about nothing:

Sara: I’m glad we’re at the Mall.  They give us money here.

Mommy: No they don’t.

Sara: Yes they do.  Just like at Wal-Mart.

Mommy: Oh, you mean when I give them money and they give us food and some money back at the cash registers?

Sara: YES!

Mommy:  They aren’t actually “giving” us money.  It means I’ve given them too much money and they are giving some of it back to me.

Sara: Well that’s just silly.

Yesterday she decided it was confession time:

Sara: Remember a couple of times ago (translation: a long time ago) when I pulled the dresser down on top of me?

Mommy: Yes I remember, but I can hardly believe that you can?  Do you remember that day?

Sara: Yeah…do you know what I was doing?

Mommy: Actually no, I don’t.  I assume you tried to climb up the drawers, which you’ve never done before.  But honestly Sara, I was around the corner.  I have no idea why you pulled the dresser down.

Sara: Weeeeeellllll, MAYBE I was trying to get that pretty shiny blue box up on top.

Mommy: That little music box on top of my dresser?  The one you beg to hold but I never let you hold because it’s very, very expensive and was a gift from Grandma to me?

Sara: Ummmmm, maybe….yes.  OK, yes, that’s what I was doing.

Last night I heard her whimpering, but not all out crying in her bed around 10 pm.  I wandered in to find her curtains on the bed.  Even the hooks were pulled out of the wall.

Mommy (laughing so hard I could hardly speak): Sara, what happened?

Sara: I don’t know!  The curtains fell down!

Mommy: Were you pulling on them?

Sara: No…yes.

Mommy: Why didn’t you come and get me?

Sara: I knew I wasn’t supposed to play in Auntie Amanda’s bed and then the curtains BUMPED ME ON THE HEAD, so I ran over to my bed and hid behind my dog.

Mommy: Now do you see why Daddy and I tell you to stay in your bed at night and stop playing in the dark?

Sara: Um….NO.

Tonight at Wal-Mart:

Sara: Mommy, Kelly kicked me!

Mommy: What do you say when Kelly kicks you?

Sara: There is NO KICKING HERE Kelly!  There is NO KICKING IN INDIANAPOLIS!!!

While reading her book about “Feelings”:

Mommy: What do you suppose the girl in this picture is feeling?

Sara: I think she is sad.

Mommy:  Do you see her bike on the ground?  Do you think maybe she is hurt?

Sara: No, she didn’t hurt herself with her bike.

Mommy: Why don’t you think she had a bike accident?

Sara: Because if she fell off her bike her Mommy and Daddy would be hugging her.  And they are NOT.  And just WHERE ARE HER MOMMY AND DADDY IF SHE FELL OFF THAT BIKE?!!!
