It sounds silly, but this is a favorite activity: taping bubble wrap to the island and covering it with warm soap and a little water.  There is something thrilling about the texture of soapy bubble wrap.  I’ve added scrub brushes and basting brushes, but mostly they just love rubbing their fingers through it.
