Are You Kidding Me?

Saturday was Sara’s School Carnival.  Oh Happy Day…Mommy loves a good school carnival.  Sara was screaming in glee as we jumped into the car, which I found perplexing, considering she’s never been to a school carnival.  She must have sensed my excitement.  We went from game to game, winning enough tokens to get an entire bubble KIT.  SCHWEET.

After filling up with cookies, we faced it…my School Carnival Nemesis…the ever elusive CAKE WALK.  I’ve spent the better part of the last 30 years trying to win a cake walk.  Just one cake.  Any cake.  But the Cake Walk Gods aren’t in my camp, big time.  I warned Sara we wouldn’t win, that Cake Karma was watching, sensing my presence, and would never allow us to choose from the countless tempting cakes on the table.

I went to an elementary school made up primarily of farming families.  Let me tell you people, those were some tempting cakes.  Farmwife cakes are so beautiful, there were moments of despair in which I considered grabbing one and making a run for it.  But as 4th Grade Class Treasurer, I had a reputation to uphold (a year long project that included fake money and a pretend economy, not much unlike our current economy which is why I am so prepared for The Recession, Thank You Cowan Elementary).

Sara was determined, but after about 15 tries, we moved on.  We bounce housed.  We even won a game of throwing rolls of toilet paper into fake toilets.  Which is ironic, considering Sara hates to WIPE.  If the game included flushing and washing her hands, she wouldn’t have won a single token.  Daddy and Kelly met up with us after their naps, and as Kelly and I goofed off, Daddy took Sara for one last go at the Cake Walk.

AND THEY WON ON THEIR FIRST GO AROUND

ARE…YOU…KIDDING…ME?!!!!!

In conclusion, to Greg’s family who tell me they are the unluckiest people on earth and they never win anything: I have an entire pound cake shaped like a clown to dispute this claim.  You are lucky at CAKE WALKS.  GO!  Find a carnival.  You could be swimming in cake heaven this very minute.

  1. I think the divine cake rules go something like this: Those who are blessed with the gift of making beautiful, tasty desserts are not dually gifted with the ability to win them for free. It’s only fair. God has to keep some level of balance in this crazy out of balance world.

  2. Are you kidding me, SARA actually won a cake. It’s Grandma Sally e-mailing from Florida. I will call her tomorrow to congratulate her. Hey Sara. All my love Grandma

  3. I know! Can you believe it? You spent years yanking me off that damned walk and Sara inherited some kind of mutated lucky gene. Amie R. is right. We now know that Sara will have no cake baking talent whatsoever. Better move onto meats. Oh wait…she’s a vegan child. Moving onto LEGUMES.

    Having fun in sunny Florida?

  4. Agreed! It’s just bad odds. For every song, depending on number of people, you only have like a 1 in 50 chance of winning. Apparently the odds: luck ratio is not in my favor.

    Never say die,

  5. There’s actually a pretty complex algorithm Sara and I developed for winning cake walks. So far, it works 100% of the time. She’s a chip off the ‘ole block…
