As some of you know, the girls inherited Greg’s wacky immune system and rarely get sick. Our pediatrician knocks wildly on wood every time I say it, but their skinny little medical charts tell the tale. Sara finally asked me last week, “Why don’t I get the fru (flu)?” I had to explain to her about immune systems, which, put in 3 year old terms, was a difficult task. Our last trip into the doctor was for Kelly’s ear infection…last JUNE.
Because we’re on a 2 week Spring Break, the fates came knocking; we are so due. Sara woke up at midnight on Saturday with a croupy cough which has turned into a mild cold. For Sara who sincerely never, ever gets sick, she is treating her cold like cancer. Her Elmo Doctor video has taught her that sick people get special treatment and more cartoon time, so she is “BERY BERY SICK”. By “bery sick”, she must blow her nose TWICE a day. Complaints of a “sore throat” are immediately followed by requests to watch “Berenstain Bears”. Again.
Kelly has an odd GI bug that keeps going away and coming back, and we finally gave our doctor a ring. Unconvinced that Kelly could actually have an illness, the front office made me speak with the nurse before they’d make an appointment. The poor child has been living on bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (Brat diet…I remember SOMETHING from pediatrics). Not that my little monkey minds in the least. A day without “na nas” is bad day as far as Kelly is concerned.
That being said, I feel like I have 2 newborns. Their sleep is OFF. Did I say OFF? Did I mention that I haven’t slept for more than 2 hours in a row in 4 nights? Because I’m telling you…I’m a walking zombie. My family can tease me all they want, but change the tornadoes schedule by 5 minutes and no one in this house sleeps for a month. It’s the trade off for health, I suppose.
We are laying low. We are so low, we may be off the grid this week. Unless of course you ask them if they want to go to the Zoo or have a playdate with friends, and suddenly, I have two Olympians in peak condition.

One response to “Off the Grid”
I am glad to see the last sentence, because that is exactly what I was getting ready to ask!
Do you guys want to join us for a visit to the zoo on Sunday morning?
We are planning on being there early (like 9AM) so that we beat the crowd that comes after church!
What do you think!?
Love you!
