The Ides of March

Do you ever have a week in which every thought, every motion, every moment feels like Groundhog Day?  I know it’s because the bit of warm weather we experienced this month has passed.  The air is once again downright chilly, albeit the sun is gorgeously bright.  Usually I grab a creative project to center me when I feel disengaged, but I’ve been staring at my projects for a week with absolute disinterest.

And still, the 11 loads of laundry I do every week must be washed, folded and put away.  The sink must be emptied of dishes 3x per day.  The dishwasher filled, washed and emptied.  The frizzy hair in desperate need of some attention must be wrangled back into ponytails, better suited for a girl 10 years my junior.  Meals and snacks must be created, chopped, cooked, and then cleaned up.  Floors will need swept.  Bathrooms will need wiped.  Windows will be covered with sticky hand prints.  Beds will be made, only to be ripped apart during games of “night night”.

The daily battle of the naps will be fought and won, only to face the long afternoon of well rested children and a poorly rested Momma.  Nap myself?  Sure, but then I will lose any hope of staying on top of the household chaos.  It’s a deal one makes with the devil in only the most desperate of situations.

In the end, I’m frustrated with myself for not being more grateful.  I literally have everything I’ve ever wanted.  But this time of year always leaves me listless. No longer being connected to the romanticism of winter, and not yet being energized by the sparkle of spring, leaves me in a no man’s land of moods.  Leave some cheery thoughts or dour commisserations.  I’ll be truly grateful for either…

  1. I just want you to know that I am here for you, despite of the fact that I missed our coffee date today… 🙁
I am so sorry about that. I am actually still working on the program! But hey, that is ok, I love my job! Right?!?! 😉
You are the best friend I could have ever dreamed of! Who would have thought daycare would bring us so close together!
You and Keri are my angels. And angels deserve to always be happy…so here…sending you all the happiness…and some coffee…that I owe you.
Now, I should be more sad…because I am not going to get to eat YOUR delicious food this weekend! Urgh! Poor boys, will have to put up with my cooking! 🙁
    Love you!!!

  2. This is why they murdered Caesar on the Ides of March. They were in a bad mood from winter lasting too long!

Anytime you say the Ides of March, it makes me think of reading Julius Caesar in Mrs. Gouveia’s class. “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” Shout out to Mrs. Gouveia for being totally hateful but really, really teaching us to write a 5 paragraph essay, which was probably the single most useful thing I have ever learned in 19 years of formal education so far!

  3. Seriously, the 5 paragraph essay may just be the backbone of all that is right with public education. Thank you Mrs. Gouveia, Dr. Rose, and Dr. Ney. God’s greatest gifts to a proper Shakespeare education. I miss Shakespeare class, Shakespeare Club, the Shakespeare annual trip….WOW, I AM a DORK.
