I’ve found with YouTube, you can’t just pull up “Dora” or “Barney”. The search yields mostly graphic and disgusting videos, designed to pun the cartoon characters our children trust and love. So I started looking for more standard kidsy nursery rhyme “stuff” on YouTube. Why? Because our kids crazy love 3 minute songs on the computer. Maybe it makes them feel grown up, I don’t know. I do know that I can clean an entire kitchen in 3 videos (dishwasher starting out empty…I’m not Wonder Woman). I’d feel guilty about it, but if Yogi Bear didn’t rot my brain stealing picnic baskets, I don’t suppose songs detailing the physical and geographical characteristics of Rhinos are going to ruin my kids either.
So, if you dare, here are our latest faves:
By far, Papa Penguin is Sara’s favorite. Seriously, though, I don’t speak a word of German. Caren, Claire, if you gals are reading, please let me know if I’m letting my small children watch something horrible. Or hell, give me an idea as to the plot! For those of you wondering how far I’ll go to stay entertained at home, I have tried to imitate the penguins dancing on this video. These videos prove that children will watch anything if it involves dancing and singing animals. Because I’m pretty sure Sara and Kelly don’t speak German. I think they don’t. I’m pretty sure.
Kelly’s favorite, or as Kelly calls it, “The Eeno Song”. I’ve probably linked this one before. I have this one memorized, and the girls make me sing it in the gravely voice over and over. Again, not a good dancer, nor am I a singer. I guess I should be thankful I’m not a Rhino.
Mommy’s favorite. A very clever ditty about the characteristics of different animals. It makes me giggle every time.
This is the exact video from the
Scholastic DVD set I blogged about in November (still the best money I’ve ever spent on any gift for the girls). Between the car, the book, and YouTube, I believe I have now read and watched Chicka Chicka Boom Boom about ONE GADZILLION TRILLION OHMYGODJILLION times. How do letters falling out of trees never get old for kids? It’s the Jamaican theme, isn’t it? We North Americans are drawn to anything even remotely Jamaican. No? Then explain why I’ve seen “Cool Runnings” 100x, and I never turn it off when it’s on TNT. Who turns off John Candy AND Jamaica? Freaks who like to watch Dora curse on YouTube, that’s who.

Have you ever heard of Laurie Berkner? She is an all time favorite at the preschool where i work. She has videos as well as just music CDs. Here is her website: http://www.laurieberkner.com/site/
She plays clips of the music on the website. I personally LOVE her. Very catchy music.
