Do They Have Salsa in China has encouraged us to do the unthinkable: allow the 3 year olds to dress themselves on Fridays. And you thought Donut Fridays were getting out of hand. If one Dunkin Donut a week doesn’t kill me, I made up my mind that allowing Sara to dress herself wouldn’t put me under either.
It has taken me weeks to get up the nerve. Those of you who know Sara understand my fear. Sara is…what’s the word? Oh yes…unconventional. Given the opportunity to dress herself, I did NOT have visions of Valentine’s sweaters with Halloween tights paired with a Christmas hair bow. I saw Sara in a pair of Snow White underwear, sticking out from under a much too short 2T nightgown, a bicycle helmet covered in panda bears, some Hello Kitty stick on earrings, and maybe one green froggy boot. Just the one. One is enough for anyone. She might add her Great Grandmother’s old straw hat and red pumps, but only if the day calls for fancy.
Anyone remember this fashion forward statement from last summer?
You can imagine my shock and surprise when she pulled out a pink summer toile skirt and matching tank top, acknowledged that we have something called “weather” in Indiana, and put on butterfly leggins and the sweater she calls her “Annie” sweater (as in, Little Orphan Annie). After all, it was 47 degrees outside, so perhaps the tank top was a bit chilly. While a neon striped sweater over pastel toile paired with Old Navy leggins might be out of the box, there is PINK in every single item of clothing. I’m shocked and pleased that she saw the need to have a similar color throughout the “costume”. Shoes and socks? No thank you Mommy, but I appreciate you asking. Before running errands she did acquiesce and put on peach and gray striped socks along with orange crocs. Delicious.
If I keep up with Fashion Friday, I’m going to need more donuts.
