My Little Old Ladies

It rained today….again.  The rain, oh heavens so much rain this summer.  The girls and I decorated tiaras, and then we had a dance party to the Little Mermaid soundtrack with the new Play Silks.  Let me repeat: PLAY SILKS!!! I’ve wanted these for a year, and I expected eyebrows to raise when I suggested them as a birthday present.  But Goomommy & Goodaddy didn’t bat an eyelash when I told them the girls would like big swaths of silken fabric.  They are GORGEOUS colors, sturdy and broad.  We’ve had them since Saturday night and they’ve been blankets, costumes, hats, furniture covers, wrapping paper, dancing accessories, and the toy that gets carried up and down the stairs at least 20x per day.  You can get them here, or here, or here, or here.  Awesome toy that you will probably see time and time again on the blog.

Then we had a carpet picnic and read about guinea pigs.  Oooo, those fascinating guinea pigs.  What better to do next than drive over to the pet store and investigate the guinea pigs in real life?  Little did we know a store full of kittens awaited us.  So much cuddling.  So much petting.  So much begging from Sara to take one home.  Next door we explored a half price book store where we found barely used titles.  Kelly has yet to take her nose out of the Big Bird Book.  Who doesn’t love Sesame Street? In the picture above she is holding a small Ernie and a flashlight, which is pretty much the list of things you’ll find her holding at any given moment in the day.

Later in the afternoon, I covered the dining room entry with an old swag and told the girls that the dining room was their house.  They set about decorating it immediately.  First, with my wedding china!  I heard a clink, clink, and rushed in just in time to let them know the china cabinet was off limits.  They seemed content to finish the decorating with balloons and pipe cleaners.  Because you know, whatever they can carry works for them.  From the living room I overheard the following conversation:

Avery: You know Sara, someday I’m going to move to heaven and stay there forever.

Sara: Can I go with you?

Avery: No.

Sara: Why not?

Avery: Because I’m older.  I go first.

Sara: Will you go soon?

Avery: Oh no.  I won’t go until I’m 80.  You’ll be 38 by then.

Sara: Good.  That won’t be for a whole entire week.

Avery: Right.

Sara: I’ll miss you when you go.  I’ll even miss you for a WEEK.  THE WHOLE ENTIRE WEEK!

Apparently a WHOLE ENTIRE WEEK is the measuring stick to the under 5 crowd.  My favorite moments of the day are catching bits and pieces of their conversations when they don’t know I’m listening.  I hear Kelly humming and giggling to herself and Sara and Avery talking about the most wacky things.  Always too late to record it, but MAN are they hilarious when they explain the world to each other.
