In this house, we enjoy Halloween. In a very, “plan the costumes starting in June” kind of way. After all, it is a child’s holiday making it sweet and sugary and full of such good memories. Like the year my neighbor Roxanne insisted on wearing her Wonder Woman Underoos as her costume. Roxanne, I’ve spent decades trying to forget the shock I felt when you showed up on my porch in your unmentionables, but to be fair, you couldn’t have been more than 4 years old. Or the year my Mom decided to capitalize on my chunkiness (betcha you’all thought I was always this size) and stuffed me with diapers to turn me into Humpty Dumpty. I was so off-balance that I tripped all night and ended up with as many bruises as I did miniature candy bars. Ah Halloween….good times, good times.
So when Grandmommy sent the girls goody baskets of Halloween placemats, socks, barrettes, crafts, candy, and wonderful what have-you’s, there was much squealing with delight. Exhibit #1 Your Honor: Sara has put on the candy corn socks, and no matter what she is wearing that day, those socks seem to coordinate. I am as much to blame. I have a small collection of Halloween tshirts that grow at each clearance sale on November 1st. This year I unveiled an awesome, eye-catching rhinestone and applique number that spells out the word “Spooky” in many, many colors. The girls would be just as happy if I never took it off. It’s the best $5.50 I’ve ever spent at Wal-Mart.
Cousin Avery slept over on Friday night, and we curled up on my bed to read bible stories. They were especially spell-bound by the story of Noah’s Ark, and as I finished, Avery sighed:
Avery: I love God.
Mommy: Me too…everything comes from God.
Sara: Except for your shirt Mommy. That came from Wal-Mart.
So there you have it. God also loves Halloween tshirts on clearance at Wal-Mart. He’s not going to spend too much money on a shirt he’ll only wear a few weeks a year! Go God!

Ok I don’t even remember that. I won’t disown you yet :). That is so funny.
You were little, and you may have even changed. You came over and we were going to go trick or treating together. It was chilly and I can’t remember if your Mom made you wear a jacket or you had an actual costume? It was cute! It was a tshirt and undies that made you look like you were wearing Wonder Woman’s outfit. We all had one. I think you ran out the door before Jackie could grab you. Or heck, Carter was President. We may have been broke! Remember when we’d put on old clothes and go as hobos?
Oh, my God, I dressed up as Wonder Woman in the underoos one year, too! Mom made me snazzy red boots out of fabric and a headband to match! Hahahaha. If I can find the picture I’ll send it to you. Roxanne, we are soul sisters! 🙂
That is funny. I don’t even remember. I do remember the hobos, and the “baby” years. I like to decorate for Halloween, but I’ve never been one for dressing up.
Lydia I love to see the picture as well. I’m sure we have both turned out to be wonder woman in our own way. 🙂
Oh Avery! I love you!
