My Kind of Town

Indy Canal

Tonight I attended a parent’s meeting at Kelly’s school.  I sat in a church basement with all kinds of Moms: pharmacists, teachers, SAHMs, all wonderfully articulate and personable.  Many sat with knitting needles in hands, many had tiny babies in carriers, all had their child’s educational well-being on the top of their To-Do Lists.  We ate our homemade cookies and drank our coffee and debated the newest magnet school information.  I know, these kinds of things should be mundane, maybe even boring.  But I never tire of the company of interesting women who have something to teach me.  I like to think of myself as the Mom who puts the “Fun” back in Perfunctory.

I drove home on Meridian, my favorite of all Indianapolis streets; south, towards the downtown, my favorite section of this very Midwestern city.  It was a wonderful 52 degrees, just cold enough for my favorite gray cashmere pashmina and cords.  The moon was full, the sky was crystal clear, and the fall leaves were blowing gently all over the roadway.

I couldn’t help but think, God, I love this town.  Indy is my kind of town, filled with my kind of people.  Enough variety to be interesting, enough Midwestern to be connected.   It’s “enough” of so many things.  I’ve moved approximately 14 times in the last 20 years.  I’d be happy to stay here for the next 20, God willing.

  1. Would this be a bad time to tell you Greg took a job up here in Northern Minnesota? We haven’t seen the sun in about 30 days and the rivers only stopped flooding because they’re freezing up. You move in two weeks! Congrats?!?!?!

  2. I <3 Indy too. It felt right moving back and I'm so glad we did! It's good to be near family and extended family (as you say, in Indiana we're all family, even your SIL's sister or sister's SIL). 🙂

  3. Oh wow. What a dream. I’ve always wanted to be a polar bear.

Good news: the girls have a favorite meal: Sunbutter and Peach Jam. They’d eat it every single day if I let them. GO SUNBUTTER! I love it too! Delish!
