Iridescence

We tried a science experiment last week that demonstrated iridescence, because The Momma loves to get her Physics Geek on.  We took large, flat tupperware containers and filled them with ice.  I let the girls sprinkle salt over the ice cubes.  They then took tiny bottles of food coloring and dripped them onto the ice.  Blue looked blue, green looked green, yellow looked yellow, and red?  RED showed iridescence.  In this picture it looks like a glare, but it turned a very unique green-diamond-opalescent type of color.  You can reinforce the teaching of iridescence by looking at soap bubbles.  What did the preschoolers take away from this experiment?  Playing with ice, salt and food coloring is messy and fun, and red isn’t always red.  And that my friends, is what falling in love with learning is all about.
