I love blueberries. Who doesn’t? It’s a super food. Oh fa-la-la-tee-da, I eat ALL the super foods, so don’t believe everything you read. I’m pretty sure blueberries don’t cure cancer. Donuts might, but they cause it at the same time, so you know…you do the math. Feeling better every day, I decided to take this blueberry thing to the next level. I made some jam. What’s better than a super food, soaked in sugar? NOTHING.
Hey, I know, let’s go pick our own! Because we’ve never done that before! Stop laughing…we live in Indiana and entertainment is where you find it. We found an adorable and well-maintained patch, with neat rows of young bushes. They were a little early for picking, but the girls enjoyed this excursion more than digging through hot strawberry fields in the mud, but maybe 2nd best to picking apples in the cool autumn.
And by “girls”, I mean Sara and our sweet little friend Mary. No amount of begging would get them to stop picking green. They insisted a variety of colors would constitute the best flavor. Haven’t decided if I’m going to let Sara test out her theory. I didn’t mean to insinuate Kelly had a good time. Kelly…is…not…a…farmer. Keep your tractor and country music…she’s having none of it.
Kelly is hitting Year #3 like a crash test dummy ramming a car into a brick wall. She could be picking fruit in the shade on a 72 degree day with a breeze while holding a chicken nugget in her hand, next to the world’s cleanest bathroom, and she’d still find a way to complain. Hmm, who does she get THAT from? Oh, me, that’s right. hee, hee (look away, look away). A safe bet might be on Kelly growing up and settling in a big city somewhere. Just an observation…
She forgave me.
Then I made my first, rather messy, but full of Fourth of July pride, blueberry pie. We have one every year, but I’ve always bought them (you are gasping, I know…what can I say, I’m a student of life). Pie, corn, watermelon…for the girls. Chianti? For The Momma. Pie, jam, and ice cream are best followed by wine, and then, a sugar coma. My sugar free primarily vegetarian dairy free building his own greenhouse father is having a seizure right now. Seriously, his pancreas is having a spasm on my behalf. Happy Summer Everyone…go get some fresh produce before we’re stuck with apples and sweet potatoes again!
