A Conjuring Turn (Musically Speaking)

As many of you know, I introduce music to the girls via “genre”, or sometimes, “instrument”, and occasionally by “what the heck was I thinking when I played Vanilla Ice?”  The girls seem to have a natural sense for how long they wish to listen to any particular type of music.  I thought Hawaiian might last until college.  They couldn’t run from Bluegrass fast enough.

I have enjoyed our Rock n Roll Summer, but I’m currently on Tom Petty/MJ/Queen overload.  I casually introduced “Cats” a few weeks ago, almost surreptitiously, HEY, like a CAT.  They didn’t really get the concept at first, and then I showed them the Mr. Mistoffelees scene via YouTube.  Actually, the whole idea probably spawned from Sara asking why I keep calling Max by that name.  He’s an escape artist of the most cunning kind.  And the girls were HOOKED.

A picture of Sara holding her cat while watching “Cats”

Now we listen to the soundtrack almost every day, while the girls prance about singing mish-mashed chopped up random verses, which brings me endless delight.  I’m not a huge fan of “Cats” to be honest, but I just don’t think they’re ready for “Evita”, and they’ve begged me to stop playing “Little Shop of Horrors” in the car.  “Cats” seemed like a middle ground.

Max is less than pleased, listening to these humans sing about his esteemed species, and off key at that!  He’s just tolerating us until it’s his turn to go to the Heaviside Layer.  I’m posting a video so you can see what kind of torture he must endure.

  1. My dear, one is NEVER too young for Evita. She was an actress and singer, married the president, and wore Christian Dior. What’s not to like? Well, except for all the lying, cheating, and stealing, you know. But when robbing a country blind for your own gain, you should always wear Dior. Lessons to be learned early. 🙂

  2. These girls never cease to amuse me! 🙂
Meanwhile, my boys here go around singing Black Eyed Peas… LOL…
    Love ya!

  3. Lydia,

I totally agree. If one is destined to be a saint and a sinner at a global level, Dior is required.

I can explain a man-eating plant, but “Another Suitcase In Another Hall”? “Well, you see girls, there was this young, um…lady of the night, and ANOTHER lady of the night KICKS her out on the street so she can snag a Presidential candidate…”

That story will not go over well in Kindergarten.

Alas, I miss our musicals. Do you think they’ll get Phantom?

  4. I see your point with Evita. Well, girls, the point of “Good Night and Thank You” is that when sleeping your way to the top, do not waste your energy on small-time, no-account radio producers. Perhaps move straight to Phantom. Much easier to understand Phantom if you are already a Disney Beauty and the Beast fan. Christine is pretty and sings well. Phantom in love with Christine. Christine in love with Raoul. Phantom does bad things like destroy opera houses, but he doesn’t really mean it, he just has adjustment disorder not otherwise specified due to bad childhood and strange facial deformity. Phantom misguidedly kidnaps Christine and tries to get her to marry him. Lots of creepy dungeons. She refuses, but then nobly agrees in order to save others. She kisses hideous Phantom, whom no one, not even his mother, has ever kissed before (ringing any Beauty/Beast bells for you here?) Her love transforms him and he sets her free to marry Raoul. Phantom conveniently then dies. They should do well with this. 🙂

  5. too cute! Jordyn asked to watch this about 5 times, so she could see “her friends”….lol
