I’m Out Of Bindis

I recently blogged here about the games the girls play.  I had to include this recent picture of the girls new love of bindis.  They have many friends of Indian descent, so to answer some of their questions about different cultures, I bought them the book, Mama’s Saris, by Pooja Makhijani.  It is a lovely tale of a girl trying to convince her Mommy to let her wear a Sari on her 7th birthday.  Little girls are the same everywhere, aren’t they?  They now like to play their games covered in their own bindis (Sara is liberal with her placement, as you can see).  We are now playing Little Red Riding Hood, which I like to call Version 7.1; Little Red Riding Hood has a cape, a bindi, and underneath it, is wearing a Sari.  Are you keeping up, because Daddy and I are not.

Recent Conversations:

Kelly: Daddy, will you play Little Red Riding Hood with me?

Daddy: Sure!

Kelly: OK.  I’ll be the Princess and you be the Pirate.

Daddy: What game are we playing?

Kelly: LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD!

Daddy: Um…OK.

The Week Prior:

Sara and Kelly: Mommy, will you play Little Red Riding Hood with us?

Mommy: Sure.

Sara: OK.  You can be the Queen, and we’ll be the Princesses.

Mommy: Who is the Wolf?

Kelly: We don’t play with a wolf!  He is bery, bery scary!

Sara: No wolves; just a mean witch in the forest trying to kill us.

Mommy: And that is somehow less scary than a wolf?

Kelly: YES!  Now shut the castle door before she finds us and dies us down!

This Morning:

Sara: Kelly, let’s play Shoe Store.

Kelly: YES!  But this time, I get to be the waitress first!
