Um, yeah…so, it’s…October? 12th? And I have over 100 tomatoes on 6 different plants still growing on the vine. Most of my natural marigold fence (which was huge, awesome, and extraordinarily effective at keeping out the rabbits) is gone, but only because I failed to water it. If we actually get to pick these before the frost gets them, I will have not bought a tomato since sometime in mid-July. Considering that Indiana is the nation’s 2nd largest producer of tomatoes, that has saved me…TENS OF CENTS! Just joking…I’ve saved at least $30. And if you count in the cost of the marigolds and the uprights and the plants, the “grow our own tomatoes project” only ended up costing us…quite a bit of money. Eating healthier isn’t cheaper. Sewing your own clothes isn’t cheaper. Heck, even baking your own bread isn’t cheaper. It is, however, a richer life.
