White Fixes Everything (Along With Pie)

How many times have you read in “Better Homes and Gardens”, that when in doubt, you should use white?  How many times have I ignored that sound advice?  The answer must lie in adding more color!  So, so wrong.  When I was taking a class at a cooking school many years ago, the teacher asked, “Would you like to eat lasagna off of a green plate?”  Yuck!  Always use white china because nothing you cook will clash with it.  Why hadn’t I thought of that BEFORE I bought the geometric/boldly-colored dishes?  Luckily I learned that lesson before I registered for wedding china, and when throwing together a quick dinner for guests last week, I realized I didn’t have a centerpiece.  I ran into the store and the only things not wilted were the white flowers.  OH.  WHITE.  So I did an all white table, and I must say, it turned into a lovely evening.

And I made an apple pie, and really, I’ve found that if you serve a fresh homemade apple pie, no one really cares WHAT colors you have on the table.  With pie being the answer to all questions, why don’t more people learn to make pie?  It’s just a thought.

Why do I bring this up now, you ponder?  A few of you have written to ask when I’ll post pictures of my newly remodeled sewing room.  I’ve (slowly) been repurposing an old bedside table, and once the paint dries (the 4th coat…ugh), it will be done.  The room is very, very, very white.  Some of you know I made an unfortunate wallpaper choice in this room a couple of years ago, and the repair suggested by my decorator (my sister, who in no way endorsed, chose, or celebrated my wallpaper choice) was to add as much white as possible to the room.  I’m not white’s biggest fan, but I literally puked white into this space.  It is now so sunny and so happy, and so Nantucket-y (my favorite word), that my children have taken up permanent residence in our new “Nantucket Room”.  To clarify, once the paint dries AND I move out the pounds of toys that have moved into my sewing room, I will post pictures.  What are your thoughts on the use of white in decorating?

  1. I LOVE The idea of a “white room.” But with two preschool boys, the white room would instantly become the “get-your-muddy-sticky-hands-off my walls” room!!!!!

  2. Oh God Caren, I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of that yet! My poor Nantucket Bead Boarding!

  3. I love your use of white, Lori, in all the photos. I am never brave enough to use white. But you have perked my interest. I always associated it with something Floridian, which actually might be nice if you aren’t lucky enough to live in paradise.

You have made white look both warm, inviting, and cozy. But I am pretty sure anything you create with your loving hands is sure to turn out looking warm, inviting and cozy. (I still wish I was your third daughter, you know.)
