I don’t know if these types of random conversations are just typical of a 3.5 and half year old, but I will say, they are typical of the chaotic all-day-long discourse I have with Kelly. I can’t always follow her, and there are times I just call for a short break of silence. She’s ridiculously cute, when you can get into her head and follow her bouncing ball.
Kelly: Mommy, can birds jump rope?
Mommy: No. They don’t have hands.
Kelly: Frogs kind of have hands, and they hop. Can they jump rope?
Mommy: No. They aren’t upright animals.
Kelly: OK then, can GORILLAS jump rope?
Mommy: Well, I suppose if you gave a gorilla a jump rope, he might figure out what to do with it. But he can’t walk into a store and buy one.
Kelly: That’s right, gorillas don’t talk. And giraffes don’t talk! (All conversations with Kelly eventually turn to 1 of 2 topics: giraffes or her best friend. Should Kelly both get to feed a giraffe WITH her best friend, she might have a stroke from so much excitement.)
Mommy: They do talk, but not how we talk. They can talk to each other.
Kelly: I don’t know how they do that. I’m going to make a list (hearing the sounds of her grabbing her Etch-A-Sketch).
#1: Giraffes don’t talk.
#2: Gorillas don’t talk.
MOMMY, this is a long list. It’s turning into more of a schedule. You won’t want to see it. [I should insert a note that Kelly is not really writing, although she can very loud drawing sounds on her etch-a-sketch.]
#3: Daddies and sisters need Mommies.
#4: Everyone needs Mommies and Daddies.
#5: Some people die.
I’m done. Whew. That was a lot of work!
