For Day #2, our theme was flowers, flowers, and more flowers. We were going for a Polynesian-style day, and the main event was a flower bar with cold drinks.
How many flowers? About 700-800 stems to be exact, give or take 100, based on Daisies that are several per stem, and darn near impossible to count. That’s 12 full buckets of flowers, and 3 very full buckets of greenery and filler flowers. You can see our model, otherwise known as Co-Chair Kristin, who selected and hauled every last flower to school. For those of you who know Kristin, I promise, her crutches were right behind her. A horrible sports injury has left her with a fractured hip, which on top of Chairing a large event, she also has 2 sons she chases at full speed. And she STILL looks fabulous!!
The School Staff came into our “flower shop” and chose 6 stems. They wrote their name on a tag, and left them at the assembly table, where volunteers arranged them in vases with greenery, etc, and tied a ribbon around the vase. Then our PTA President delivered every bouquet to the classrooms, offices, etc. In all, we arranged about 100 vases in 4 hours. Kristin may be on crutches, but while sitting, she can make gorgeous bouquets at the speed of light. Thank God a few of her friends volunteered to help, because I spaced getting “floral volunteers”. Live and learn. A big thanks to my Dad for loaning me the paste buckets which I decorated with our logo and filled with flowers. Another huge thanks to my Mom, who watched Kelly all day, because without her, my chairing of any event would be nearly impossible.
Here is an example of a finished bouquet. So bright, so cheery, on such a dark and rainy day. I spent the day greeting the teachers and guiding folks through the shop, so I had the best job in the building. I was in an olfactory heaven.
Linda, who has 4 kids at the school (applause!), made some amazing contemporary vases. She swore she didn’t have a flower arranging background, but seriously? Really? Her arrangements spoke otherwise. Linda is our brave Daisy Scout Leader, so yes, more APPLAUSE!!
We had enough flowers remaining to make some centerpieces for tomorrow’s Italian Luncheon. That’s right…we’re not even halfway through the week yet! I was warned this event is a marathon, compared to the sprint of Gifts Galore. Apparently, I’m more a sprinter? Buy hey, at least I’m sleeping well.
My drink table was nothing to write home about, but it did have flavored lemonades, root beer, juice smoothies, and Starbucks frappuccinos. I didn’t want to waste precious flowers on this table, and without overwrought decor, almost every drink was devoured by the end of the day. Some things just don’t require gussy’ing up I guess.
Hope you are enjoying this journey with me. I may be tired, but I’m really having a lot of fun. 3 more days, 4 more events. Wish me luck!

This is so awesome! The amount of time and preparation an event like this would take says a lot about both the teachers and parents. You have such a gift for appreciating others!
