The Cinderella Book Bag

I’m not going to beat around the bush on this one…I’m proud of this bag.  Now that I’ve created and appliqued this level of detail, I feel like I’m moving forward in my skill set. I found a free clip art silhouette of Cinderella and turned it into a grape purple applique.  I love this deep purple wool felt, but it didn’t pop against the hot pink felt Sara chose for the bag.  Luckily, Sara also chose the neon green for an accent color and with a quick oval, VOILA!  POP!  I simply couldn’t make a neon green Cinderella.  Some things really cross the line.  As with all of my projects, Greg came to the rescue:

Me: HONEY!  I’m up in the sewing room, and I could really use an oval.  Could you print a 12″ by 9″ oval for me?

Greg: What?

Me: You could use the object palette and make a quick oval.

Greg: I understand HOW to make an oval, I’m just not sure how I’m going to make one wider than the largest paper our printer will hold.  HONEY, paper is 8.5″ x 11″.

Me: Um…of course.  HONEY!  Could you make me an 8.5″ x 11″ oval?

Greg: There will be a margin, but coming right up!

Literally, in 60 seconds, he produced the world’s most perfect oval, which I turned into a felt applique (special note for my crafting friends: I don’t use felt sheets you find in the crafting aisles.  I use 100% wool felt, found on bolts in the fabric store.  If it’s thin…don’t buy it. It won’t be fun when you try to work with it.)

My original thought was that the oval would be limiting on the opposite side of the bag, but I love how it turned out.  I think the hat’s ribbon flying off the green space adds whimsy.  I added a little monogram for the birthday girl (who LOVES LOVES LOVES all things princess), stuffed the bag with a Princess book, a Hidden World of Fairies book, and Fancy Nancy books.  It seemed apropos for a tea party birthday party, that was loads of fun, full of little girls in long gowns, large-brimmed hats, having their makeup done, followed by drinking lemonade out of tea cups.  SWEET.  In case you didn’t gather this emotion from tonight’s post: I LOVE having daughters, and I love my book bag theme for this year’s party gifting!

  1. The bag is delightful, Lori! And I LOVE your idea of the book theme gifting! What little girl wouldn’t love it, too? Thanks for sharing your endless talents and ideas with those who don’t share the same extraordinary ones!

  2. You are such a great mom. Can’t wait to see you this summer. I will contact uncle mike and see what assistance he can provide me with in tracking down our fellow trip mates.

  3. Ok, don’t laugh, but I didn’t even know there was another kind of felt. I’ve only ever used the sheets they sell at Michael’s and such. Must investigate immediately!!
