Blind Farmers Unite!

Sara inherited her NOS tendencies from me, and she’s not alone in the “my eyes are crap” department.  It’s a long story, so I’ll just say eye appointments make me nervous, and it’s possible, in the future, I’ll need to be sedated just to survive them.  I am joking.  Sort of.  I don’t know WHAT I was thinking scheduling my eye pressure check on the same day as Sara’s eye therapy appointment, while keeping my niece during her parent’s move into a new home.  Well, clearly…I was NOT thinking.  Yesterday was a CRAP day that started out CRAPPY and turned into a huge CRAPSTORM.  Sara and I took our mutual anxieties over the myriad of things out of our control and we rammed our respective bad moods into each other until the Universe cracked right down the middle.  It was ugly.

We did some hugging and apologizing, and by late afternoon, everyone was in the pool, dinner was in the oven, and the Universe was put right again.  I noticed Sara was transfixed by something at the edge of the garden and I wandered over towards her.  And there it was, in plain sight, so easy to spot even 2 blind girls could find it: our pole beans found the poles and have started to spin their way up.  I’ll bet we’ve checked our tiny bean plants 3 times a day for a month.  I’ve never planted pole beans, but I whispered sweet confidences into my ears about being a 5th generation farmer, as I put the tiny seeds into the ground.

After a little jumping and laughing, we did some spinning, arms flailing, singing “We’re farmers!  We’re farmers!  It’s your birthday!”  It was not a pretty sight, but it was a happy one.  I’m sure my family is having a good laugh at my excitement over a few beans, but I was born into a large family of teachers and farmers.  I’ve spent my life killing plants and teaching?  Oh Lordy, don’t ask me.  Not only do I dislike teaching, but I equally dislike being taught.  I have the patience of a gnat.  BUT, LOOK!  I’m growing very non-dead beans!  It’s amazing what 2 girls with 50% vision fields can do when they put them together.  If you like math, that’s 100% vision.  Blind Farmers Unite!

  1. Awesome! This is the first year we haven’t planted pole beans. I will miss our usual bounty! Enjoy watching your beans grow. 🙂
