Fairy Fall House
Every summer my hometown holds a large Fairy event, which begs the question: why now? I lived there for 27 years. TWENTY-SEVEN. Not 1 fairy event. My girls are having all the fun. To enter, children must walk through a magical door that is suspended in the woods, and they find themselves on candle-lit walks, scattered with tiny fairy homes. Held on the grounds of the old Ball Mansions, it’s…just…awesome.
One of the Ball children’s play houses has been preserved in the woods, and even the side of her perfectly octagonal play house has a door for fairies:
The educational cabin is set up as a library for the fairies, and a magical librarian leads children through crafts and highly detailed instructions on how to spot a fairy (and how to tell the difference between a fairy and a sprite):
As I may have mentioned, I don’t recall the Ball grounds covered in craft tables and remodeled cabins when I was a child. Nothing like this, that’s for sure:
I shouldn’t complain. It’s not like I suffered. The Village Pantry put in a store near my home when I was 10. Trust me, if you grew up in the middle of nowhere Indiana, getting a VP was like winning a ticket to Disney. I could ride my bike and get Fun Dip candy WHENEVER I WANTED. Living large folks…LIVE-ING large.
The Fanciest of Fairy Homes (if someone knows the work around on centering pictures in WordPress, please send me a note. It’s just mayhem over here!)
My favorite portion of the Enchanted Fairy Walk were the fairy homes on display inside one of the restored Ball Manors. There were rooms and rooms of these things, each one more ornate than the next:
Fairies dine in style.
The evening ends with little girls dressed as fairies (oops, Momma didn’t know were were supposed to come in costume), parading out through the woods lit with fireflies, behind a musical band of actors dressed as all sorts of fairy and fairy-related characters.
The Hoosier House
I’m glad my girls’ memories of my hometown will be so special. I can always treasure my warm memories of being kicked out of every pizza joint on the Ball State campus as a bratty high school student. Wait. THAT WASN’T ME! Um….I can explain….

Oh how fun!!! I can imagine your girls, and you too had tons of fun. Love the maxi dress, so cute and you can always put a shirt under it and wear it in “cooler” weather 🙂
I would like to make a comment on the quality of this blog. I mean, the stories are cute and all that, but if you can’t learn to center your pictures, I may be forced to lead another boycott (you may remember the “fuzzy, nostalgic edged photo” boycott of 2010.) One must have standards. 😉
I love it! I so “get” the VP comment and the pizza joint comment. Come to think of it, I may have been with you when you got kicked out.
PS I can’t believe with a man like Greg living in your house you can figure out the centering issues! His “Computer Genius” badge just got slightly tarnished, I’m afraid.
Oh no Rachel, I’m pretty sure we got kicked out of the student center!
Ha ha ha…good times, good times.
