The Stabile

When I asked Kelly what she was up to with the pile of hangers, she told me she was making an Alexander Calder-style Stabile.  Which reinforces why I volunteer as often as possible in Kelly’s Art Class: I’m getting the Art Education my parents couldn’t afford.  Even if it means I have to sit on the rug crisscross applesauce with the 4 year olds.  Last week the Art Teacher introduced Bas Relief, and mentioned, “Lori, I’m sure you know about the Elgin Marbles?”, to which I replied, “I have NO idea.  That’s why I’m here!  Yeah Preschool Art Class!”  I like to think I’m her most enthusiastic student, but to be fair, I’ve never made a Stabile out of hangers.

  1. I agree about art class! That is the best volunteer gig in the entire school. We have Cooper’s artwork from school framed in his playroom. I give a tour saying things like -“This is Cooper’s reflection on Andy Warhol’s everyday objects…” or ” this is Cooper experimenting with Jackson Pollock’s methods…” Cooper just thinks is makes our house look “fancy”.
