Fasten Your Seatbelts, It’s Going To Be A Bumpy Night!

The girls are going through a strong “put on a show” phase.  As a theater/movie buff of hmm, let me count, oh yes, my ENTIRE life, it’s possible this phase won’t pass.  I’m just so OK with that.

Sometimes we get flyers in advance, such as the night we were invited to the Gymnastics & Ballet Show.  Sara’s best guess spelling is creative, but at least she’s finishing.  We’ve come leaps and bounds from the “no vowels” phase, and the “to heck with it, I’ll just use ALL the vowels phase”, and thank God we’re passed the “I’m only using the first 3 sounds that pop out at me” phase:

Their shows have so much kinetic energy:

With a touch of a surreal Cirque Du Soleil quality (you may notice a cat clinging to the dining room door frame, fearing for his life):

Maybe I’m misinterpreting.  Maybe it’s less Cirque Du Soleil, and more of a drunken Riverdance.  I have enjoyed the silent shows when they just pretend to paint.  A) It has antagonist feel, as if they are trying to protest something through layering theater and visual art, despite the actual lack of paint, and B) It has given me the idea that I should paint that nasty old hand-me-down Secretary (as opposed to hack it up and burn it, which has always been my plan):

I especially like the night when the 3rd Act ended with an obstacle course.  Nothing like the unexpected surprise ending in Theater to really get you to thinking.  What were they saying?  Life is just one big maze?  When you finish, you should expect to be a Disney Princess? Hula Hoops are deeply misunderstood?  I JUST DON’T KNOW!

Finally, after enduring enjoying many shows, we decided to show them how the masters perform.  We were doing them a disservice by not sharing our unbridled talent.  A big thanks to Kelly for loaning me her prized headband as a costume prop:

In the end, I’m certain they were unimpressed thrilled with our work. I think it’s important to show your children, on as many occasions as possible, that Mommy and Daddy CANNOT be embarrassed.  Not at the Mall.  Not at the Grocery Store.  Not even in our own living room.  We will pull out all the stops to remind them WE INVENTED THIS FREAK SHOW:

Ah, the sweet smell of 2 people who have no dignity left to lose.  Parenting brings out the best unexpected in all of us!  Break a leg my friends…break a leg.

  1. OMG I laughed my butt off for this entire post. What was my fave, so hard to pick, the cat clinging to the door frame, the parental show? Oh man. Love it all.

  2. The cat. The cat is afraid. He thinks to himself, “The pet store lied to me. They said I was going to nice country estate to get some rest. I pictured tea, and classical music. Then I get here, and I discover that “resting at a country estate” was government speak for “locked in the insane asylum in a subdivided neighborhood.” Never trust the government.”

  3. As my 3 cats are being pet while lounging in front of the fire with their full bellies. Whateva’. I can only hope my next life is as Greg’s cat.

  4. What if cats really rule the world and we are but pawns in their little games. “Hey Max! I got an idea. Think we can get the dark haired one to dance around the living room and act like a fool? That’d be amusing.” “Yeah, that shouldn’t be hard. Then we’ll pretend we like the big guy and get some dinner and belly rubbing. Come on, let’s go!”
