Card-Making Class

One thing I’ve always liked about the girls’ school is its eclectic extra-curricular activities.  They have the usual karate-math blast-scouting, type of things, but they also have offerings such as Pottery Class and Beginning Hindi. In the summer they host things like Magic Tree House Camp and Mad Science Robot Camp.  I don’t recall having these options as a kid. Had there been an after school activity titled, “We Worship Greg Brady”…I mean really…where do I sign up?  So when I saw “Card Making” on the after-school list, I knew it was a class made for Sara.  I don’t know many 6 year old’s who keep stationery boxes under their beds and request Vera Bradley stationery kits for their birthdays, but I do know ONE.

They’ve made such unexpected and delightful designs.  She’s used antique phone stamps topped with painted glitter hearts.  The card above was one she made for her old pal Bryce, and it included an envelope, a slide out card, a stamp, and a coordinating top piece, all made and assembled by Sara.  Her instructor is really clever, and knows how to make this sport truly enjoyable to the Lower School age group.

Sara’s spelling has advanced, along with her messaging.  When I opened up this card covered in circus tickets and cotton candy, I couldn’t stop giggling.  “Have fun cleaning up your room”.  From: Sara, To: Avery.  The picture on the bottom is Avery trying to move a load of “stuff” into her closet.  Ah.  The love of cousins.  It’s bittersweet, yes? So a note to family and friends: you may be receiving a card (cardS if you are a little blonde named Avery) in the mail sometime this spring.  If you are in the receipt of a Sara card, treasure it.  Sara may just grow up and turn Hallmark on its ear.
