Sara’s preciously loved, but unfortunately crushed, Fairy, found new life via Mommy and some glue.
After the last pancake dish was washed, the last little slumber party guest was hugged and sent on their sleepy way (1:30 am!! Up at 7:00…ai ye ye…but such GOOD girls, and such a sweet little party, picturesque, I promise), and the last of the Barbie cake was NOT eaten (pretty, but not very yummy), the 4 of us were left with a newly opened calendar. I had gently cleared the rest of the weekend, hoping some down time after Week 1 of school would do us good. Oh my, did it ever.
I never make our bed. Princess Wonderland needs TOPOGRAPHY.
We did get dressed the one time, after Mommy awoke from her first real nap in 7 years. We stumbled into the Chinese Buffet with wet hair and wrinkled clothes on Saturday night, almost with a feeling we were emerging from a cocoon. For some odd reason, we were content spending the entire weekend between 2 side-by-side rooms upstairs: our Master bedroom and my sewing room, which are by far, the messiest spaces in our house right now.
Sara took it upon herself to measure and compare the sizes of every door in the house. Good news. They match.
Daddy is off and running with his latest inspiration. He walked into the living room last week and asked, “Would you like me to surround our Master Bedroom windows with built-in bookshelves joined by a window seat?” Um…am I dreaming this? Because if I am, DO NOT WAKE ME UP. I know I won the husband lottery, but seriously…you had me at “built-ins”.
Sara was happy with her mask, secured with elastic straps. She did well with her first use of the applique scissors (the eyes and nose.)
As it turns out, we really only needed the 2 rooms this weekend. My sewing room is covered with crafting items, markers, a computer for playing movies, Calico Critter pieces, fabric, the obligatory hot glue gun, toys in various stages of repair, and a Cricut. The girls and I spend most Sunday afternoons just rolling around in the mess, starting and never finishing several projects at a time. We set aside plenty of time for “oohs” and “ahhhs” for each others Masterpieces.
I taught Kelly to repair her own stuffed animals with needle and thread. Not bad, not bad.
Sunday was met with the same commitment to those rooms. The mess multiplied, but never instigated a movement to another space. The 4 of us were happy amidst the clutter, tooling around together. Daddy had us nearby to stand and cheer as every new piece moved into place. The girls seemed content taking turns at the sewing machine, slowly, ever so slowly, piecing together long strips of fabric we’re hoping to turn into one-of-a-kind dresses.
Kelly found a dowel rod and scrap ribbon and made a rainbow fairy wand. Kelly and the rainbows: her perma-theme.
I just know the future will pull us elsewhere on our weekends. Some day there will be games or lessons or whatever else the rest of the country does in their free time. In all honesty, we do very, very little. Better stated, we do a lot of very, very little things. The 4 of us here together, tucked into our cozy house, weekend after weekend, is my most favorite thing in the world. What does your family like to do with their Saturday & Sunday stretch?
