Abstract Art, The Fates, And A Give-Away

I’ve been tasked to run a Student Art Contest for our school’s Auction this year.  The top 3 winners will be sold at the Auction, complete with framing.  I can’t wait to see what is created.  I won’t be judging, as I have exactly zero-point-zero background in art, but you can count on me for posters!  Professional? No. Crafty?  YES.

I don’t know what reminded me of Sara’s Jackson Pollock phase, but everything fell into place from there. As coincidence would have it, I was in a head-to-head with Fate on Painting Day.  I had my car shampooed and detailed, only to drop an entire mug of coffee inside the car within 24 hours of having it cleaned. For 24 sweet hours, it was newer than new.  The coffee flew so high, I walked into Kelly’s Parent Teacher Conference with coffee in my hair. I believe there is only one way to fight Fate, and that’s by saying, “GAME ON BITCH“.  Oh yes, I said it.  She messed with a professionally cleaned minivan.  “Bitch” is the nicest word I could muster.

Coffee?  That’s all you got?  Because I have an entire bucket of poster paints, and I’m going to let my kids throw paint RIGHT AT THE MINIVAN.  No drop cloth.  How you like them apples? You want a mess Fate?  I’ll show you mess.  Or to quote my husband, “If you’re looking for my wife, just follow her creative WAKE.”  Unfortunately my pictures stink because I left my Nikon in the school Art Room (of all places).  I don’t know how you guys are out there taking these amazing pictures with your phones.  I could do better with a 1978 Polaroid.

As you can see, I basically punched Fate in the mouth.  She should stop messing with my kind of crazy. Well, only sort of crazy.  I washed this stuff off immediately!

I used my favorite little cutting tool to finish the posters.  Remember last summer’s party invite? Fiskar’s has an exacto knive that fits over your finger, and swivels.  When I found it, I wasn’t even sure I needed it, as much as I just wanted to see what it would do.  It allows you to cut as if you are writing.  I know…blows your mind, doesn’t it?  I cut the splotches in about 30 minutes.  I love these posters.  I love as I walked through the halls the kids were stopping me to read them.  But mostly, I love that the girls helped me make them.

Fingertip Swivel Detail Knife

To kick off this Holiday Season of crafting, I am giving away a new Fiskars Swivel Detail Knife.  To enter, just leave a comment and tell me what you are looking forward to this holiday season.  Train displays?  Lights? Food? Crafting?  Anything at all.  Put as much good energy out there as you want.  Each comment is an entry into a random number drawing.  The comments will close on Friday, November 23rd, at noon EST.  Happy Holidays You’all!

*Fiskars is not providing this product, or paying me for this post.  In fact, I’ve never met Fiskars, shared drinks at a party, or otherwise flirted with Fiskars.  Anyone suggesting I have a relationship of any kind with Fiskars is just spreading gossip.  That being said…Fiskars, this is crazy…here’s my blog…call me maybe.*

  1. Lori, only you would let your kids throw paint at your minivan! 🙂 I love it. And I love those Fiskars. I’ll kick off the comments and say I’m looking forward to all the family gatherings and playing games late into the night with cups of hot chocolate. I love the Christmas season.

  2. Oh…the above comment says my husband posted that…but he didn’t. He doesn’t need those Fiskars, he makes fun of me for my crafting. And while I’m at it, I’ll give you another thing I am looking forward to: Singing “O’Holy Night” at our church during the Christmas Eve service. Hands down one of the most beautiful sounds on Earth!

I am looking forward to being home for a month and coming over to Chez Lori, where there is always fantastic food, lots of chaos, a messy kitchen, a ridiculously overdecorated mantel, and fun people! And I’m looking forward to wrapping! And Sam is looking forward to visiting the Disneyland of toys that is your house! Yay Christmas!

  8. I’m looking forward to my families crazy Christmas Eve party – its like a college house party but with people who will tease you about dropping the church collection basket 20 years later! Although, it may be more tame this year with a couple pregnant ladies and more than just my kids…

  9. I’m loving this post! So many fun comments about the holidays. Kara, yes, there will be pie, and yes, we will be there! Lydia, we’ll also come back here, and here you will be. Karin, I dropped the flesh of Jesus on the feet of the Priest. Not when I was a child. Last Sunday. I did it last week. SO me.
