We’ll Need More Boots

With School Auction tasks flying about like those crazy Wizard of Oz Monkeys (sorry…Auctions aren’t my strong suit), Kelly’s V-Day Party games to plan, 2 girls wanting to keep the tradition of small treats for friends on their half-birthdays, and while we’re talking “traditions”, did you hear “Science Fair Season” is upon us? We’re so knee-deep in our Master Bedroom remodel, we’re actually sleeping in the dead center of the room, surrounded by rubber maids and painting supplies.  It’s CHAOS.  So tonight, looking over the To-Do list, I decided to do the most critical task first: I de-mudded the boots.

Indiana weather is FUN.  The ground was covered for 2 weeks with a foot of snow, followed by a full thaw, followed by inches of rain.  I cannot describe the quality of the mud in our back yard.  Stellar.  5-star mud.  When we had a Saturday (in January no less) above 60 degrees, the girls ran outside at the speed of light. I didn’t think to check their shoe selection until through the open windows I heard screams of delight.  MUD GARDEN!!! OH NO. Oh no. Mud gardens are great, as long as their in rain boots.  Which, of course, they weren’t.

They went muddin’ once underneath my radar, and once under Greg’s.  When we finally got them into their rain boots, we realized we had 6 pairs of shoes/boots literally caked  top to bottom with mud.  Oh Indiana in January.  You never disappoint.

Tonight we’re dipping below zero, which means I can’t get said boots dried fast enough.  Although they’d don’t go outside to play in temperatures below 20, and this time of year is usually reserved exclusively for their snow boots (which were saved from a mud bath, thank you Jesus), this weather makes you want to slide on boots of all kinds. Even our slippers are shaped like boots.  The boot socks are in the dryer.  Extra blankets are on the beds. Goodbye mud, hello morning wind chill of -11.

Snow should follow by week’s end, followed by locusts, and possibly a drought. It’s hard to predict the weather “here in the middle”, so just in case, I’m thinking of buying just a couple more pairs…of boots.  Stay warm my Hoosier pals.  Stay strong.  We’ll be in a heat wave by March. Or a blizzard.  Again, hard to say.
