I’ve mentioned before my daughters go to a unique school. There is no bell curve. There is no box. Every child is taught where they are, at their speed, challenged to reach up within their style with expert guidance from the teachers, and loved for their strengths and sometimes rather off-beat qualities. I like to think as the PTA President, I fit well into this eclectic environment. Of course, for those of us there, it doesn’t feel eclectic at all. It feels quite peaceful and predictable. In a place where everyone is respected for doing their own thing, there seems to be enough room for so, so many “things”.
Greg looked out into our backyard today and we snapped this photo of Sara, doing her own thing. Always, always…she is doing it her way. He said to me, “Isn’t this the perfect visual for our school’s mascot?” Ha! The Eagle is great. I love our Eagle. But in all honesty, I must make a proposal for the Hiking Snorkeler. Which isn’t quite accurate, because those aren’t hiking sticks…they are Sara’s invented crutches, but the Injured Snorkeler doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
I’m really looking forward to the upcoming school year. I can’t wait to spend time with the Chess-Playing Swimmers, the Karate Kid Mathematicians, the Flute-Playing Acrobats, the Sprinting Bookworms, the Spanish-Speaking Artists, and most especially, the Hiking Snorkelers. I love these brave, inventive children so very much. I hope you enjoy this year of stories too. It’s bound to be a colorful ride!

I love this image and story so much, Lori!!!
If only there were more places in the world where people–not just kids–could be respected for doing their own “thing.” Lots of sadness would be eliminated, that’s for sure.
Thank You Rachel! That means a lot coming from a gifted teacher such as yourself. Children should be championed for trying on their hats, because in so doing, we create genius within everyone.
